Can I defer my offer, or change my preference?

Undergraduate applicants

You can defer your ANU offer for 6 months or 12 months provided you meet the following conditions.

  • You must apply to defer on or before the census date for the relevant semester. It is preferable to apply for deferment before the semester begins. If you want to defer until semester two, there may be restrictions on what courses you can take.
  • You must have a valid reason to defer, including wanting to take a break between school and university, needing to work before commencing study, or for health reasons.
  • You do not undertake any other study while deferred. This is because ANU considers the full academic record of all applicants. Therefore, if you undertake additional study while deferred we would need to reassess your qualifications against any new entrance requirements. Exceptions to this restriction include undertaking an exchange year in a secondary school, undertaking non-award studies and undertaking TAFE / AQF studies at Certificate level. Your deferment will lapse if you undertake tertiary studies above Certificate level.

When you apply to defer, you will not receive an immediate decision, nor will you be able to check the progress of your deferral. We will contact you as soon as we reach a decision.

For 1 year honours programs, please reach out to the relevant College to discuss deferral options.

Early Offer Application

Please log on to your Early Offer Application to apply for a 12-month deferment. Then, you can change the deferment to 6 months by clicking here.

Please send a request to admissions@anu.edu.au if you would like to change your preference. Each request will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Undergraduate UAC applicants

Please send a request to admissions@anu.edu.au if you would like to change your preference. Each request will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Postgraduate applicants

You cannot defer an offer to a postgraduate program. However, you can request to change your preference, or intake by emailing admissions@anu.edu.au. Your email should include the following minimum information:

  • Your name
  • Your application ID (it starts with a 'W') and, if known, your ANU ID.
  • the name and commencement date of the program you'd like to be assessed for.

Please note: Since this is considered a new application, your application will be reassessed.

Non-award and cross-institutional applicants

You cannot defer an offer to a non-award or cross institutional program. However, you can re-apply for a future intake by submitting a new application.
