Assessment for Credit Transfer Eligibility

The Australian National University (ANU) recognises and acknowledges students’ previous academic accomplishments. You could be assessed for potential credits based on your prior qualifications. If you are deemed eligible, you'll be granted study credits towards your degree, reducing the number of subjects you'll need to study to complete your degree at ANU, which may also shorten your program duration.

ANU facilitates two types of credit assessment processes:

1. Credit assessment conducted during your application assessment

If you are applying for one of the programs listed below, your credit eligibility will be assessed automatically. The applicants with an AQF bachelor degree in a cognate discipline may be eligible for 24 units of unspecified coursework credits. Please check Programs and Courses for the latest information on cognate disciplines for your preferred program.

  • Master of Archaeological and Evolutionary Science
  • Master of Asian and Pacific Studies
  • Master of Engaging Asia
  • Master of Heritage Tourism Management
  • Master of International Relations
  • Master of International Law and Diplomacy
  • Master of Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies
  • Master of Museum and Heritage Studies
  • Master of Political Science (Advanced)
  • Master of Political Science
  • Master of Regulation and Governance
  • Master of Strategic Studies (Advanced)
  • Master of Strategic Studies
  • Master of Technology Governance

For further information about credit eligibility, including limitations on granting credit, please refer to the ANU Recognition of Prior and External Learning policy.

How does it work?

Step 1 – Submit your application

Submit your application to study your preferred program at ANU and provide your complete academic transcripts and degree certificates. Your credit eligibility will be assessed at the same time as your application assessment.

Step 2 – Eligibility for credits

Applicants applying for one of the programs listed above with an AQF bachelor degree in a cognate discipline may be eligible for 24 units of unspecified coursework credits. If you are eligible for credit, this will be indicated in your offer letter. No additional action is required from your end.

Step 3 – Confirm your credits

When accepting your admissions offer, you will need to confirm whether you wish to accept the academic credits mentioned on your offer letter. For international applicants, the length of the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) will be adjusted accordingly if you accept the academic credit.

To facilitate processing of any unspecified credits you are eligible to receive towards your program, please fill out the Application for Course Credit (Status) form after accepting your offer and email it to the appropriate college for further processing.

2. Credit assessment is conducted after receiving an offer

For all other ANU programs, applicants may apply for credit or exemption after they have accepted their Admissions offer. Please refer to the course credit or exemption page for detailed information about this process. It is important to note that the process for credit application may vary across colleges. Should you have any queries regarding the procedure, we recommend reaching out to the relevant college for clarification.
