If you’re planning to study at The Australian National University (ANU) or putting together a Canberra weekend plan, you’ll probably want to know where people actually go for a night out. Canberra boasts a diverse range of pubs and bars, from easy local favourites to places that stay busy well into the night.
This guide brings together some of the best bars and pubs in Canberra, featuring dependable locals, well-known spots and venues that suit all sorts of plans.
1. The RUC
The RUC is one of those Canberra pubs that is a classic for a reason. Big, social and reliably fun, it’s a common meeting spot for ANU students. The space lends itself to groups, whether you’re stopping in for one drink or settling in for the night.
Live music is a hit on Friday nights, carrying the energy into the weekend. Barefoot lawn bowls is an easy win for groups who want something to do between drinks and the happy hours are hard to beat.

There are plenty of ways to use the venue, whether that is meeting friends over coffee or cocktails, watching the footy, or heading out later in the evening. Inside, you will find a mix of bistro seating, leather booths and high tables, while outside sits one of Canberra’s best-known beer gardens.
With room to host both small and large groups, Assembly has become a reliable choice for events, gatherings and everyday plans alike.

The drinks list is where Molly stands out. There is a strong focus on whisky, with bottles from around the world, alongside a cocktail menu that leans towards classic rather than flashy styles. Live jazz and piano sets are performed on select nights, adding another layer to the atmosphere without overwhelming the room.
For those seeking a quieter experience within Canberra's nightlife, Molly offers a different pace while still located in the city.
