Living on campus includes much more than a roof over your head. ANU and our residences provide a variety of support services, including financial, academical and wellbeing support.

Support services

Residence team

Every residence has a team of staff who are available to provide round-the-clock support to residents or connect you with professional trained staff at ANU. This includes the Head of Hall, Residential Life team, Community Support Officers, Residential Mentor, Property–Manager-Operations and reception staff.

For residential enquiries relating to applications and offers, the Accommodation Services team is here to help. You can reach out to them from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm AEST/AEDT at:

Wellbeing services

ANU Student Safety and Wellbeing is a free and confidential support for students experiencing a range of issues that can impact on their university experience and academic engagement.

ANU Counselling is a free, confidential counselling service on campus for currently enrolled students. Alongside one-on-one sessions and their 24/7 support line, ANU Counselling offers workshops and group programs, support with adjusted courses of study and a range of suggested resources for managing crises and supporting good mental health.

ANU Wellbeing and Support Line is a 24-hour telephone and texts counselling support service available to students experiencing situational stress, emotional difficulties, and mental health concerns. Contact the ANU Wellbeing and Support Line on 1300 050 327 (voice) or 0488 884 170 (text).

ANU Psychology Clinic is a training, treatment and research centre offering specialised psychological services ANU students.

ANU has also developed a list of mental health resources covering wellbeing, university study, relationships, away from home and crisis or trauma.

Medical services

ANU Medical Centre is the on-campus health care provider on levels 2 and 3 of Health and Wellbeing Centre (Building 156) in Kambri. Services are currently free for ANU students.

Pathology services are co-located with ANU Medical Centre. Services are provided by Capital Pathology.

Academic support

Get academic support within your residence. The residential academic coordinator organises events to enhance academic learning such as peer-to-peer mentoring, while the residence team can help with academic direction and navigating academic processes.

ANU Academic Skills help students to develop the key academic skills and communication strategies that are foundational to all academic activity, such as referencing and academic integrity, writing and assessment, and adjusting to university.

ANUSA provides support, advice and assistance to undergraduate and postgraduate ANU Students requiring help with academic appeals, legal matters, and financial hardship.

Indigenous students

Tjabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre provides a meeting place and support base for Indigenous students and staff at ANU. It offers academic support and advice, pastoral care, personal support, access to quality tuition, and guidance on internships and scholarships. The centre also connects students with various ANU services such as the health centre, careers, and academic skills.

Accessibility services

Accessibility supports students within the community whose participation in academic studies is impacted by physical and learning disabilities, mental health conditions, chronic medical conditions, and short-term illnesses/conditions. They also support carers and elite athletes. This team can support students with accessing assistive technology, adjusting study plans, applying for special consideration, and developing an Education Accessibility Plan (EAP). Spiritual support

ANU offers spiritual support for all students, staff and visitors through the multifaith Chaplaincy service. The Chaplaincy comprises of chaplains representing various faith traditions, including Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Baha'i, Humanist, and Buddhist. These chaplains provide confidential support and guidance, allowing individuals to discuss their concerns or explore matters of faith. The team consists of diverse women and men, lay and clergy, serving mainly on a volunteer basis. Other support

ANU Sport offers students five free group fitness classes each week through the ANUSA Class Pass. Students can also enjoy one hour of free facility hire weekly for sports like badminton, basketball (half-court), cricket, tennis, pickleball, or squash.

Financial aid

Residential bursaries and scholarships

If you're an ANU student facing financial difficulties and need assistance, you can apply for the Emergency Accommodation Bursary or explore available scholarships.

Care is administering the ACT Government's Rent Relief Program, which provides a one-off payment of four weeks rent, up to a maximum of $2,500. ANU residents are eligible to apply.

Other grants and bursaries

ANUSA provides financial assistance to eligible enrolled students who are experiencing sudden or unexpected financial hardship that is adversely affecting their education. The main criteria for the Assistance Grant are the demonstration of a genuine need and that continued study may be in jeopardy due to financial hardship.

The Student Urgent Relief Bursary (SURF) provides support to ANU students who are experiencing financial hardship and require immediate financial assistance. Students may apply for more than one expense; however, the maximum total amount disbursed may not exceed $2,000 AUD per calendar year. Successful applicants do not have to repay the money.

Resources for budgeting and managing debt

ANU provides guides on saving and budgeting, managing debt, contact details for assistance, additional support, and further resources for students.

Care is a Canberra organisation that offers free financial counselling. They can assist with credit, debt, budgeting, gambling harm, and consumer law issues.

Resources to ease living costs

Food relief

ANUSA offers various free food programs for ANU students, including free meals and weekly groceries with non-perishables.

Students facing financial hardship access to groceries can receive a maximum of $50 worth of grocery vouchers per semester through the ANUSA Voucher Program.

ANU Community Connect provides support to eligible students experiencing food insecurity. It aims to support these students and connect them to other services so they can break the cycle of food insecurity.

You can also apply for various Community Connect Food Relief, student financial support grant, textbook grant, Club Lime membership, ANU Sport membership or Griffin Hall membership through The Community Connect: Financial Supports form.

The Food Co-op is a community owned-and-run bulk grocery store and café, events venue and community hub in walking distance to ANU. The Food Co-op offers lunch to members at an affordable price. The membership cost $15 per year, and offers many benefits, including product discounts and access to events and facilities.

Our residences run several events, which may include free food and drinks. Students may source fruit and vegetables from their residential gardens.

Other support

ANUSA Book Bursary supports and assists students facing financial hardship to purchase books which are essential to their studies.

Student Life organises a variety of activities from giveaways, gardening, making jam and learning how to crochet.

Some residences operate second-hand shops where donations are welcome from everyone. These second-hand shops primarily serve residents living in that residence.
