About this scholarship
Each year the Research School of Earth Sciences (the "School"), ANU College of Science (the "College") may offer up to two awards known as the Alan and Julia Beck Supplementary Scholarship ("the Award").
The objective/s of the Award are to support outstanding PhD students to pursue PhD studies in Geophysics at the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences.
Funding for this Award has been provided by the late Emeritus Professor Alan E. Beck and Julia Beck.
Emeritus Professor Alan E. Beck's career in geophysics began at the Australian National, University (ANU) in 1952; he was Professor John Jaeger's first PhD student in the fledgling Department of Geophysics within the University's Research School of Physical Sciences. While doing his doctoral thesis work, he met Julia Langley who was working at ANU after graduating in Geology and Mathematics from the University of Sydney. They married in Sydney in 1955, and raised three children, Helen, James and Graham. Julia Beck obtained a Masters degree in urban geography. She became a passionate advocate for the conservation of heritage buildings in Ontario, for which she received awards from the municipal and provincial governments. She passed away in 2012.
Professor Beck was a founding faculty member (1958) of the Department of Geophysics (now Earth Sciences) at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. He was Acting Head (1961) and then Head (1963) of the Department of Geophysics until his retirement. Professor Beck was a founding member of the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC), Vice Chairman (1979 - 1983) and Chairman (1983 - 1987) and held leading positions in several international scientific organizations. He championed the foundation of the International Geothermal Association (IGA) and chaired the inter-association commission of The International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI).
Professor Beck retired in 1993 but continued to participate in international organizations and lectured widely on terrestrial heat-flow measurement and the study of the Earth's thermal state. Beck was honoured with the J. Tuzo Wilson Award of the Canadian Geophysical Union in 1993. He passed away in 2020. He is remembered as a loved and respected member of global geophysics community and was a formative influence for many scientists.

- Enrolled full-time in a program of study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the subject area of solid earth physics, with the Research School of Earth Sciences;
- In receipt of an approved ANU HDR Base stipend scholarship.
- Must be able to be located on the ANU campus for the duration of the program to undertake research.

Additional information
- Supplementary 'top up' scholarship: $8,000pa fortnightly for 3yrs with 6mth extension.
- Research Support: The recipient has access to a travel grant (at least $3,000) to facilitate travel to international conferences, and/or support visits to international collaborators, for the greater benefit of their PhD studies. This will be a one-off payment recipients can apply for throughout their program.
