About this scholarship
The Australian National University may offer a number of awards known as the ANU Sport Elite Athlete Scholarship.
The objectives of the Award are to attract elite athletes to the University; strengthen and support the University’s sporting community and empower athletes to pursue excellence in both their academic and athletic endeavours.
Funding for this Award has been provided by the ANU Sport and Recreation Association (ANU Sport).

The Award is available to a commencing ANU student who:
- is a domestic or international student;
- receives an offer of admission to an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program at the University;
- is recognised as an elite athlete (para or able bodied) or coach, meeting one or more of the following criteria:
- Is identified as a categorised athlete by their National Sporting Organisation (NSO), State Sporting Association (SSO), Player Association (PA) and appears on a current categorised list;
- Holds a scholarship within the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) or with one of the eight State and Territory Institutes and Academies of Sport;
- Is affiliated as an elite athlete or coach with one of the organisations listed on the ANU Scholarships website; and/or
- Demonstrates elite sporting achievement by meeting one or more of the following criteria:
- Holds an individual national ranking within the top 15 for an Australian Sports Commission - recognised and funded sport;
- Has been selected for a State team competing at the National Championships, or is actively vying for selection;
- Competes in a National Sporting Organisation-affiliated national competition at senior or reserve level;
- Holds a top 3 individual ranking at the state or territory level in an Australian Sports Commission - recognised and funded sport;
- Is a member of a State open-age squad or equivalent for the highest level/grade of the sport;
- Is a member of a National (age-capped or open-age) squad or equivalent (AIS) for the highest level/grade of the sport;
- Demonstrates a comparable level of achievement in a respective sport not covered by the above criteria.

The value of the Award is stated in your letter of offer. The duration of the Award is for the length of the recipient’s academic program, up to a maximum of six years. The Award is paid in equal instalments at the beginning of the semester unless otherwise stated in the letter of offer.
The recipient is responsible for making payment of all tuition fees by the prescribed date as set out by the University each session. Recipients of the Award are responsible for the costs of books, study materials, accommodation and all other costs of study.

National Sporting Organisations (NSOs)
NSOs are responsible for managing and promoting their sport across Australia. Examples include:
- Cricket Australia – Governs cricket nationally.
- Football Australia – Oversees soccer (association football).
- Athletics Australia – Manages track and field athletics.
- Swimming Australia – Governs competitive swimming in Australia.
- Tennis Australia – Governs tennis and organises the Australian Open.
State Sporting Organisations (SSOs)
SSOs operate at the state level and typically work in partnership with their respective NSOs. Examples include:
- Cricket NSW – Governs cricket in New South Wales.
- Football Victoria – Oversees soccer in Victoria.
- Swimming Queensland – Manages swimming in Queensland.
- Athletics WA – Governs athletics in Western Australia.
- Tennis SA – Oversees tennis in South Australia.
Player Associations (PAs)
Player Associations advocate for the rights and welfare of professional athletes. Examples include:
- Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) – Represents professional cricketers.
- Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) – Represents A-League and national soccer players.
- Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) – Represents NRL players.
- Australian Netball Players’ Association (ANPA) – Represents elite netballers.
- Australian Basketball Players' Association (ABPA) – Represents NBL and WNBL players.
Any sport which is affiliated to a recognised National/State/Provincial Sporting Organisation or professional player association in another country of residence will be considered part of the formal sporting structure and eligible to apply for this scholarship.
