Mr Fluffy - impact on the ACT community.
A high benefit PhD scholarship and flexible field of study project is being offered by the Population Health Exchange (PHXchange) ANU.
The successful applicant will conduct research that explores the impact of loose fill asbestos insulation (commonly known as 'Mr Fluffy') on the ACT community and society as whole.
Important: While this scholarship sits within the College of Health and Medicine, it is open to all disciplines, and we encourage applicants from any research background to apply. It is not necessary to have identified your exact research question. Our team can help you plan your application, so please contact us with your expression of interest, and we will help you develop an application.
This is an opportunity for scholars to make a significant contribution to their chosen field of research. Applicants have the freedom to outline a project and choose one or more disciplinary approaches, based on their own strengths and preferences. The Scholarship provides an opportunity to undertake inquiry into aspects of the community experience other than physical health, for example mental health, creative, social and/or policy responses, etc. .
Applications are encouraged from, but not limited to, people with relevant lived experience with Mr Fluffy for example as a resident, as part of the policy response, or private industry.
Applications are also encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people with culturally diverse background and those who identify as LGBTIQ+.
This PhD Scholarship is funded by the ACT Government and was a recommendation of the Community and Expert Reference Group.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree with at least upper second-class honours or equivalent, or a Graduate Diploma or Master's degree with a significant research thesis component and/or relevant experience.
Applicants must be domestic and, if successful, will be expected to enrol as a full-time candidate in the PhD program in 2021.
Additional information
- Stipend: A stipend of $38,000 AUD per year will be disbursed fortnightly (by ANU) over three years as long as the scholar remains enrolled full-time as a PhD Student at ANU.
- Research costs: the scholarship includes up to $5,000 (in total) to cover research costs incurred as part of the project, such as data access, travel, conference registration, thesis and publication costs - reimbursement subject to approval by the Chair of the Supervisory Panel upon receipt of appropriate invoices.
- Paid leave: Allowances for paid leave entitlements such as medical leave, maternity and paternity leave.
