Each year the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (the "School"), ANU College of Science (the "College"), may offer a limited number of Awards known as the Joan Duffield PhD Supplementary Scholarship ("the Award").
The objective of the Award is to encourage outstanding Australian students to pursue PhD studies in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
Funding for this Award was provided by Miss Joan Duffield. Miss Duffield was the daughter of Professor Walter Geoffrey Duffield, the inaugural Director of the Commonwealth Solar Observatory at Mount Stromlo. Miss Duffield was a treasured member of the Mount Stromlo community and a long-time supporter of science and astronomy.

Continuation based on maintaining base stipend scholarshipsThe award will be available each year to a prospective (or continuing, within the first 6 months of commencing the PhD) student who is:
A supplementary scholarship in the value of $5,000 per year, paid fortnightly (for one-year only) parallel to the base stipend scholarship.
There is no separate application for this award. All domestic applicants for the PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics with RSAA who receive a base stipend scholarship (e.g. RTP, URS, ANU PhD Scholarship) will be considered for this award.
