About this scholarship
Each year the School of History (‘the School’), in the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (‘the College’), may offer an award known as the Minoru Hokari Memorial Grant (‘the Award’). There are two awards on offer under this fund, one to support Fieldwork, and another to support Indigenous languages research.
The objective of the Award is to provide funding to cover the travel and fieldwork costs of the recipient.
Funding for this Award has been provided by various donors, led by Mr Hokari’s sister, Yuki Hokari, to commemorate the life and achievements of Minoru Hokari. Minoru Hokari (1971-2004) made outstanding contributions towards ‘crossculturalising’ historical practice and towards developing a respectful collaborative research strategy with Indigenous Australians. A graduate of Hitotsubashi University and the ANU, Minoru conducted fieldwork amongst Gurindji elders.
There are two awards on offer with the objectives of the Awards to;
- provide funding to cover the travel and fieldwork costs of the recipient; and
- to support research into Indigenous languages, with special interest in the Gurindji language.

The Award is available each year to a continuing HDR candidate or early career academic who:
- is a domestic or international candidate enrolled in an HDR program at any Australian university; or
- has successfully completed such a program in the past three years.
Travel and/or research must be undertaken in the year the Award is granted.

How to apply
In order to apply for this grant, applicants are required to submit a letter addressing the selection criteria (see section 5 of the Conditions of Award) and providing the following information:
- Research overview;
- Budget; clearly state what the funds from this grant are being requested for and the amount; indicate other sources of funding;
- Indication that supervisory support is available;
- Current curriculum vitae
- Applicants are encouraged to indicate if they identify or are connected to the Gurindji community to recognise their contribution and support to Minoru Hokari during his research.

There are 2 grants on offer, the fieldwork grant provides $6000 paid in one instalment at the beginning of second semester unless otherwise stated in the letter of offer to assist with expenses related to fieldwork or research.
The Indigenous Languages grant provides $4000 to assist in the research of Indigenous Languages paid in one instalment at the beginning of second semester unless otherwise stated in the letter of offer
