As my Master of Neuroscience degree at ANU comes to a close at the end of this semester, a family member asked me at a dinner recently what the most interesting thing I had learned during the course was. Of course, I couldn't think of one thing as there had been, and still is, a seemingly endless stream of stunningly fascinating things.

While I was reflecting on how to answer, I could see in my mind's eye flashes of all the workings of all the systems, cellular pathways and numerous concepts I had learned about; and could only muster an answer that was something like, "that everything is connected." I think I sounded a bit crazy! But truly, this course has been more than I could have hoped for or imagined and has taught me so much about the science of our brain and nervous system, and so much more.

If I could answer that question again, I'd say, "I have learned that far more stunning than any science-fiction film is our nature; our inner miraculous workings and inexplicable, elegant and intricate connection to the natural forces within and around us." I would also quote the line out of Dune (as I am a big sci-fi fan): "The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience." Yes, the course is that good.

I have been in a constant state of awe at the course content and the incredible teaching staff who make it come alive. I'm forever grateful for my incredible supervisors, lecturers and tutors who are so knowledgeable in their fields and have mastered the art of imparting their scientific knowledge in a way that synthesises the evidence with current developments. I have also felt very supported and encouraged every step of the way, which has added to this challenging program being such a fulfilling experience.

As a result, I have also learned a lot about myself—that I am capable of more than I thought, and I have my teachers to thank for that. It has been a life-enhancing privilege to be a student of neuroscience at ANU.
