Whether it’s your first time seeing snow or you're a seasoned skier, a little prep goes a long way. Here are some quick tips to help make the most of your snow season near Canberra:

  • Dress smart: layers are key as it can get warm while skiing or boarding, but cold on the lifts.
  • Book early: the snow in New South Wales is popular, so accommodation, lift passes and lessons can sell out fast, especially during school holidays and peak winter conditions.
  • Hire gear: whether you need skis, snowboards or clothing, rental options are available at Corin Forest, Thredbo and Perisher.
  • Plan your breaks: Thredbo and Perisher have great village spots for food and warming up. Don’t feel like you need to stay on the slopes all day.
  • Carry snow chains: if you're driving through alpine or national park areas like the Snowy Mountains, snow chains may be required on certain weekends.
  • Sunscreen matters: the glare from the snow can be intense, even on cloudy days. Don’t skip sun protection.
