Picture this. It’s a quiet, normal night on campus. You’re relaxing and watching your favourite show on Netflix. Suddenly, you have the urge to find the nearest heater and the cosiest jumper. What is happening right now? That is when you slowly realise…

Canberra winter has arrived.

Welcome to our official guide to help you through the icy months in Canberra.

Overview

  • Canberra winter is freezing, but layering and staying toasty warm is key to making it through the chill.
  • With viral nasties floating around, staying on top of your health with seasonal veggies and nourishing food is essential.
  • Why not make the most of the crisp winter days and head outdoors? A walk or a trip to the snow is a great way to get moving in the colder months.

Layers are your best friend

If you’re wondering if your outfit is warm enough, put another layer on. Layers are absolutely key for the Canberra climate. Think long-sleeved thermals, tights under your pants, and a black Kathmandu jacket. Layering up will keep you warm without the bulk and mean you can stay comfortable inside and out. Materials like high-quality wool and cotton are perfect for maintaining heat, so keep that in mind when choosing your cosy winter wardrobe.

Comfort is key. Big scarfs, beanies and chunky socks will make you feel amazing.

Hot winter walks

While it’s tempting to hibernate until winter passes, the season presents some beautiful days in Canberra. The light looks softer, and somehow, the sky seems bluer. Take advantage of the crisp wintery days by rugging up and going for a walk. A loop around Lake Burley Griffin will take you past iconic sights, and trails around the National Arboretum will weave you through hundreds of lush trees. Read our blog with all the best walking spots around town to map out your routes.

Stay nourished

With germs running rampant in the colder months, you need to take care of your body and pack in the nutrients. Winter is certified soup season, and there are so many sneaky ways to include lots of seasonal veggies and herbs into a delicious, hearty broth. Check out the yummy soups of the day at on-campus pub Badger & Co. and warm up from the inside out.

Hit the slopes

This tip to surviving Canberra winter involves… leaving Canberra. Just a few hours in the car will take you straight to the snow, where you can fully embrace the cold. Thredbo and Perisher are the top snow destinations for Canberrans, both offering stunning mountain runs for skiing and snowboarding. If snow sports aren’t your thing, there are plenty of après bars and restaurants where you can sit back and watch the action. For regular snow trips, get in touch with ANU Snowsports to find out more.

Keep up with what you love

If you’re feeling gloomy on those short and chilly Canberra days, keeping up with your favourite things is a great way to brighten things up. Staying engaged and focused on your hobbies and interests throughout winter will give you that added serotonin boost, even if you’re inside more than in the warmer months. If you’re an avid reader, try out some new books, or if you love to play board games, why not host a weekly game night with friends?
