Finding good, affordable food as a student can be a struggle—especially with the rising cost of living. But at the Australian National University (ANU), there are plenty of ways to find free or low-cost meals, whether it’s through the various ANU Students Association (ANUSA) food programs, community initiatives or hidden gems.

If you’re looking for the best spots to eat at uni without stretching your budget, here’s everything you need to know.

Free food programs by ANUSA

ANUSA offers various programs to assist students:

  • Free breakfasts: Start your day with a complimentary breakfast at the Brian Kenyon Student Space (BKSS) from 8.30am to 10.30am.
  • Food vouchers: If you're experiencing financial hardship, you can apply for a $50 grocery voucher once per semester. To apply, email sa.admin@anu.edu.au.
  • Student Bites: This initiative provides food assistance, including OzHarvest pickups on Friday afternoons at BKSS.

Residential food initiatives

ANU student residences have embraced a creative and sustainable approach to minimising food waste while supporting students:

  • Food recovery programs: Residences collect surplus food and redistribute it to students in need at BKSS. Surplus food is carefully portioned to ensure nothing goes to waste.

Community Connect food relief

The Community Connect Food Relief service provides basic needs support to students experiencing food insecurity along with information about student support services on campus.

  • Food relief assistance: Students can get in contact with the community connect food relief team by clicking on the “Tell us about your situation” button and filling out the form on their webpage.
  • Financial support: In addition to food relief, other supports are also available for students who are eligible.

The Food Co-op shop and café

Located at 3 Kingsley Street (just off campus), the Food Co-op is a community-owned and operated bulk grocery store and café which has been operating since 1976.

  • Affordable meals: The café offers nutritious vegan lunches at reasonable prices. Students can enjoy a $9 organic lunch, packed with veggies and proteins (better than a bowl of instant noodles, we say!).
  • Membership benefits: For $15 per year, members receive shop product discounts (including bulk orders), access to events and use of the co-op's facilities.

The Food Co-Op is a great option to shop on a budget while staying healthy as a student.

Additional support around Canberra

Beyond the ANU campus, there are several organisations in Canberra that offer food assistance:

Tips for making the most out of free food resources while at uni

  • Plan ahead: Mark your calendar for free food events and weekly programs so you never miss an opportunity.
  • Bring reusable containers: Many food programs allow you to take leftovers – perfect for meal prepping.
  • Stay connected: Follow ANUSA and your student residence on social media to stay updated on the latest events and initiatives.

By making the most of these resources, you can enjoy great food, connect with your community and hopefully ease the financial pressure of university life.

Whether it’s a free breakfast at BKSS, free pizza at a residential event, or a budget-friendly meal at the Food Co-op, we hope this guide has provided you with stepping stones towards some delicious, affordable meals.
