For Victoria Yeung, the journey from Hong Kong to Canberra has been more than just a geographical move; it has been a harmonious blend of culture and academia.
The Australian National University (ANU) student has played the guzheng since she was six or seven. It’s a traditional Chinese instrument with 21 strings and 2,500 years of history. You have probably heard it referred to as the Chinese zither.
She chose the guzheng over the piano to connect more deeply with her culture. In turn, it has helped her to feel closer to home during her university studies, leading her to join the ANU Chinese Classical Music Ensemble while juggling her ANU Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in psychology and economics.
Victoria lives in a student residence on the Acton campus and loves Canberra’s slower pace and weather. She’s balanced her studies with a passion for her instrument and found a sense of belonging.
As her time at ANU draws to a close, Victoria reflects on her journey and shares insights into her life as an ANU student and musician.
