Why Canberra is the ultimate student town

Hello Canberra

When you think of iconic student towns, your mind probably jumps to the American classics like Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls or even the quirky community college vibe of Community. But what if we told you that the ultimate student town isn’t a fictional place, but right here in Australia? Yep, we’re talking about the national capital, Canberra. It's where the student life you’ve always imagined comes to life.

Uni vibes

Okay, let’s get the academics out of the way because let’s be honest, that’s why you’re heading to uni in the first place (well, mostly). ANU is located in Canberra's CBD, and we are consistently ranked among the top universities in the world. But, more importantly, ANU is the kind of place where you can get to know your professors in small classrooms, participate in exciting research and be part of a community that’s out to change the world, not just pass exams.

It's not all lectures and textbooks, though. Uni life in Canberra is about getting involved, whether through student societies and clubs or by grabbing a coffee and a bite to eat with your friends between classes.

Canberra hosts a few other unis and vocational and technical colleges, making it a melting pot of students studying a range of disciplines. They come from just about everywhere, across Australia and 100 countries worldwide.

A city perfectly blended with nature

Now, here’s where Canberra starts to shine. In most capital cities, your fresh air options come with traffic noise, hard to cross streets, and a few trees if you are lucky. But in Canberra, you’re spoiled with space and stunning views. Take a jog around Lake Burley Griffin uninterrupted by cars, hike or bike up and down Mount Ainslie for some serious Insta-worthy views or chill in one of the many parks dotted around the city. It’s like having a host of nature retreats right outside your residential hall, all within easy distance for a stroll or ride.

If you’re a night owl, Canberra has a nightlife scene that’s totally geared towards students. Whether you’re into beautiful wine bars, pub trivia nights or dancing to amazing live music, there’s something for everyone. And the best part? So many of these things are close to ANU — and you don’t have to battle massive crowds or big prices like you would in Sydney or Melbourne. It’s all about quality over quantity here and having everything within easy range.

Stretch your dollar further

Let’s talk money because we all know that the tight student budget is real. Canberra might be the capital of Australia, but it won’t empty your wallet like bigger cities. Your nights out won’t leave you as broke. This means more cash for the fun stuff, like impromptu road trips or that extra round of coffee or snacks during late-night study sessions.

And getting around? Super easy. The public transport here is student-friendly, with discounts galore, and the city’s layout and paths mean you can get pretty much everywhere if you're environmentally minded or don't have a car. So, whether you’re cruising to class or exploring the city on the weekend, Canberra is easy, cheap and fun — especially when you’ve got the wind in your hair and that fresh air in your lungs.

Where everybody knows your name

One of the best things about studying in Canberra is the community vibe. It’s a city that feels like one great big, tight-knit uni campus or country town, where you’re never more than a few steps away from a familiar face. Whether joining a club, volunteering or just hanging out on campus, it’s easy to connect with people and make friends. Plus, the city's smaller size means you’re more likely to run into your mates at the local café or spot your lecturer at the farmers' market.

Canberra is also big on inclusivity. No matter where you’re from or what you’re into, you’ll find your people here. The city celebrates diversity with open arms and there’s always something happening — a cultural festival, a food, second-hand or local designer's market or a spontaneous gathering in one of the city’s many parks.

Opportunities to shine all around you

So, what happens after you’ve aced your exams and thrown your graduation cap in the air? Canberra’s got you covered on the career front, too. Being Australia's political heart, there are many opportunities in government and policy, but that’s not all. The city is also growing in tech, education and creative industries, meaning you’re spoilt for choice regarding internships, work placements and grad jobs.

Our strong ANU alumni connections mean it's possible to have a foot in the door before you finish your degree, making the transition from student to professional life smoother.
