Change of preference

We know how important it is to start your university journey in a residence where you’ll feel comfortable and supported. As part of the Early Offer process, you will have the chance to submit a request to update your residential allocation, including up to three additional preferences.

While we will do our very best to accommodate as many requests as possible, please note that updates are subject to availability, and we may not be able to meet all requests due to limited spaces in some residences.

Change of preference requests can be submitted from Monday 2 November until Sunday 15 November 2026. You must have accepted your early offer of accommodation as is to be eligible to apply for change of preference.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Do I need to submit a separate accommodation application if I apply early?

No. You can apply for accommodation as part of your Early Offer application to ANU. There is no need to submit a separate accommodation application. It is one of the many advantages of applying early.

Am I guaranteed an offer for my preferred residence?

ANU guarantees you an offer of accommodation, but not your preferred residence. This is due to high demand and limited availability across residences.

Each year, we receive a high number of applications for catered residences, often exceeding the number of available beds. If we’re unable to offer you a place in your first preference for catered accommodation, we’ll do our best to explore other catered options before considering a self-catered residence.

We understand that choosing between catered and self-catered accommodation can be an important part of your university experience, and we’ll always try to accommodate your preferences wherever possible.

If you have a medical condition or special requirement that means you need a specific type of accommodation, please provide full details and any relevant support documents in your application. This information will be taken into consideration during the assessment process.

Can I apply for multiple residences?

When you lodge your Early Offer application, you can nominate one preferred residence only.

If you receive an offer in the September round and are not satisfied with your allocated residence, you will have the opportunity to submit a change of preference form in November. At that stage, you may nominate up to three preferred residences. You must accept your accommodation offer in the September round to be eligible for the change of preference.

What additional information do I need to provide if I am applying to an affiliate residence?

As part of your application to John XXIII College, you will be asked to complete a separate questionnaire. The College will send you a link to this questionnaire after you submit your application through the Early Offer application portal.

In addition, the College requires a one-page personal reference outlining why you would be a great fit for the community. This reference can be written by a coach, teacher, or someone who knows you well in an academic or extracurricular setting.

Please direct all enquiries directly to John XXIII College by emailing admissions@johnxxiii.anu.edu.au

If you choose Burgmann College as your preferred residence, you will be asked to complete a separate application form. You must also submit a personal statement, your CV and two references, one personal and one from your school.

Please direct all enquiries directly to Burgmann College by emailing application@burgmann.anu.edu.au

Why didn’t I receive an offer for my preferred residence?

We always do our very best to allocate students to their preferred residence. However, due to high demand, this is not always possible.

If we are unable to offer your first preference, we will allocate you to the next best available option. Please remember that ANU guarantees all eligible students an offer of accommodation, but we cannot guarantee that this will be for your preferred residence.

When I applied early, I did not apply for accommodation. Can I still apply?

Yes. You can make a separate accommodation application through the ANU Accommodation Portal.

As a first year commencing student, you are covered by the accommodation guarantee. This means you will receive an accommodation offer from us if you receive an Early Offer.

Please note that accommodation offers made outside of the Early Offer process are released on a rolling basis from November and follow different timelines.

Is my accommodation secured when I accept my Early Offer in December?

Accepting your accommodation offer through the Early Offer application portal does not fully secure your place. To confirm your room allocation, you must also log in to the ANU Accommodation Portal, accept your accommodation contract, and pay the required initial deposit by the deadline provided.
