Accommodation guarantee extended
The ANU accommodation guarantee has been extended to all students who apply by 31 January 2025. This means that every eligible student who meets the application deadline will receive a guaranteed offer of accommodation for one of our on-campus residences or any other university approved accommodation in Canberra and its surrounds.
As a first-year undergraduate student starting in your first semester at ANU, you are guaranteed accommodation in one of our approved residences. While we will make every effort to provide you with your preferred housing option, please note that if this is not possible, we will offer you an alternative that best suits your lifestyle.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Do I have to pay to apply for accommodation?
No, there’s no fee to submit your ANU accommodation application, and the process takes only about 10 minutes. Apply early to help us process your offer quickly.
Do I need to have an offer to ANU to apply for accommodation?
No, you don’t need an ANU offer to apply for accommodation! However, you will need an ANU offer to receive an accommodation offer from us.
Do I need visa to receive an offer of accommodation?
No, your visa doesn’t need to be finalised to receive an accommodation offer. We encourage you to organise your accommodation as early as possible to secure your spot on campus. If your visa isn’t processed by your contract start date, we’ll work with you to adjust your contract to Semester 2 or refund your acceptance fees.
When will I receive my offer?
We have started issuing offers from 18 November on a rolling basis. If you don’t receive your offer on that exact date, don’t worry! We’ll send offers to students with confirmed ANU offers and those who meet eligibility criteria. If there are any issues with your application, we will contact you.
Am I guaranteed to receive an offer for my first preference?
We aim to match students with their preferred residences, but we can’t guarantee it. If you receive an offer for a residence outside your preferences, you can add your name to our waitlist, and we’ll update waitlisted students within two weeks.
Can I transfer residences if I don’t like mine?
Yes, you can apply for a transfer through our bi-annual inter-residence transfer process. For more details, see our guidelines on inter residence transfer.
Can I see the accommodation?

What is included in the cost?
Our fees cover utilities, internet, catered meals (for catered residences), and cleaning for shared apartments. Residents also enjoy free events, high-quality facilities (like music rooms and common areas), 24/7 security, and academic and well-being support.
Are there female-only residences?
All our residences are mixed-gender, but you can request to be placed in same-gender floors or apartments in your application.
Can I get single semester contract only?
Yes, single-semester contracts are available for students graduating mid-year or on exchange programs. You can request this during your application. If you’ve already been issued a full-year contract, contact us with documentation, and we’ll update it for you.
