About this scholarship
Each year, Bruce Hall, a residential college at The Australian National University, offers an award known as the Bill Packard Scholarship with the aim of assisting students in financial need relocating from outside of the Canberra region, with the cost of accommodation fees whilst they undertake an undergraduate degree at the ANU.
The Bill Packard Scholarship was established as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Bruce Hall in memory of William (Bill) Packard AM. Bill was the founding warden of Bruce Hall and was instrumental in shaping the Hall's Culture during his 25 years as Warden of Bruce Hall. Donors to the Bill Packard Scholarship, mainly past residents, have done so to promote and protect the sense of community that makes Bruce Hall the transformative environment where each resident is encouraged and supported to achieve their own personal best in all aspects of life. The Hall continues to support and encourage engagement between the resident body and the broader University and Canberra communities and, through this, to promote active participation in discussion, debate and dialogue designed to broaden students' academic experience of the ANU.

Eligibility
The Scholarship shall be available for award each year to a student who:
- is a domestic student;
- is enrolling in an undergraduate degree program at the Australian National University;
- will reside at Bruce Hall;
- is relocating to Canberra from outside of the Canberra region ;
- through applying for direct admission to the University, has been assessed as having financial hardship.

Selection is made on the basis of an applicant's financial need as assessed in their application for admission, aligned with the University's strategic objectives to ensure a diverse student cohort.
Additional factors to foster diversity and inclusion may be taken into account and may include, but are not limited to:
- Rural/regional status
- Educational access or disadvantage
- Gender
- Geographic region
- Indigenous status
- Refugee status
- Disability
In the situation where these factors are not enough to separate candidates, academic merit may be considered.
The scholarship offers payment of $7,500 per annum paid directly towards the recipient's accommodation tariff. The duration of the award is up to three consecutive years while the recipient remains in residence at Bruce Hall.
All applicants applying for admission to ANU through the direct Admission Scholarship and Accommodation Application will be automatically considered for the award based on them meeting the eligibility criteria and electing to be considered for scholarships.
Where a scholarship cannot be awarded to a direct applicant, it may be offered to an applicant applying for admission and who has been assessed as eligible to receive equity adjustment factors via the University Admissions Centre (UAC).

Recipients are expected to remain actively engaged with the Bruce Hall community through participation and involvement in Bruce Hall community events to create a positive residential community.
Being the recipient of this scholarship does not guarantee continuation of residence at Bruce Hall from year to year. Recipients will need to apply through the "returners' process" for continuation of their residence at Bruce Hall. If successful the scholarship will continue based on them continuing to meet the eligibility and ongoing eligibility requirements.
