Transitioning from high school to university is a game changer. But with more freedom comes new challenges, especially when you’re a high achiever looking to stand out from the crowd in the job market and excel in your future career.

If you’re determined to get HDs in uni exams and assessments, we’ve compiled some top-student tips to help you get there.

But first things first.

What’s an HD anyway?

A High Distinction on the ANU grading scale is a score of 80 to 100 – and the students who regularly get them have a range of similar characteristics, which we’ve captured in our top tips. Read on!

1. Put yourself out there

  • Meet your peers: Make an effort to get to know your course mates and lecturers.
  • Participate: Engage in group work and discussions to grow your learning experience.
  • Expand your opportunities: Building connections can lead to internships, friendships and even study abroad experiences.

Bouncing ideas off your fellow students can be a great way to learn and grow.

2. Make study work for you

  • Know yourself: Identify where you study best. Is it at home in your pyjamas or in a quiet café on campus?
  • Make the most of uni resources: We have amazing study spots around the ANU campus, from 24-hour libraries to vibey cafes. Use them to your advantage!

3. Connect with other brains

  • Bouncing ideas: Discussing course material with peers can deepen your understanding while improving your confidence.
  • Join a mentoring program: Consider the Set4ANU mentoring program for a holistic support system in your first semester or the First-Year Experience (FYE) program to build your uni community.

4. Prep for lectures

  • Stay ahead: Unlike high school, no one’s checking if you did your readings. Set a schedule to read chapters and additional materials ahead of lectures.
  • Engagement is crucial: Taking the time to understand course content and participate in discussions will significantly grow your learning, as will asking questions of your lecturers and tutors.

5. Manage your time wisely

  • Beat procrastination: Recognise your procrastination triggers and devise strategies to overcome them.
  • Make room for fun: With good time management, you'll have time to explore one of the 200+ clubs and societies at ANU!

6. Master note-taking

  • Develop a unique approach: Reflect on what’s worked for you in the past, and bring those techniques into your note-taking. Everyone learns differently—whether through colours, diagrams, or mind maps—so lean into what makes learning click for you.
  • Tools of the trade: Use digital tools like OneNote or stick to good old pen and paper—whichever helps you connect ideas better.

7. Do your research (well)

  • Find reliable sources: Use ANU Library ‘how-to’ guides and workshops to navigate academic resources effectively.
  • Familiarise yourself now with the types of academic writing commonly used at university.
