When meeting Sanuga, you wouldn't guess that he has travelled from the other side of the country to study engineering at the Australian National University (ANU). There are lots of clubs and societies at ANU to discover new friends and expand your interests.

When he applied to ANU to study for a Bachelor of Engineering (Research and Development) (Honours), he was awarded two exciting scholarships, the Australian National Scholarship and the Australian Excellence Scholarship. These were packaged with an early offer to study at ANU, which Sanuga credits as a standout experience of the University.

“Getting early acceptance significantly alleviated the stress of my final year of high school, allowing me to fully enjoy and make the most of my last year in Perth.”

Before Sanuga knew it, he found himself in Canberra, ready to begin his undergraduate studies. Studying interstate had always been his dream but obstacles such as financial burdens clouded his ability to envision turning this dream into reality. When Sanuga became a double scholar, he felt the doors open to newfound support he never knew was possible.

"It was highly improbable that I could have managed to relocate to Canberra and pursue my studies independently. My scholarships removed a significant obstacle from my path, allowing me to focus on academic and personal growth."

Sanuga felt ready and prepared to excel in his studies. He was eager to learn more about himself and his new home city. After some exploring, he concluded that Canberra was the place for him. He loved the balance between city life and the beauty of the natural world. He especially appreciated how he could reach the city centre with just a 10-minute walk from campus. Residing in one of the most liveable cities in the world provided the perfect backdrop for his university adventures.

Sanuga quickly discovered a community of like-minded students and peers. Living in Kinloch Lodge on campus during his first year allowed him to form relationships and bonds with people he never thought he'd share common interests.

Sanuga found a new love for sport after joining the ANU Cycling Club and the ANU Mountaineering Club. Despite not being a fan of physical activity in high school, sport quickly became an integral and enriching part of his university life.

"ANU clubs have given me the opportunity to explore mountain biking, kayaking, and rock climbing. Mountain biking has become a passion of mine and I can't emphasise enough the support and encouragement taking part has given me."

Support also came from his peers and professors in his engineering program, which has enabled Sanuga to delve into, learn about and pinpoint his true academic interests.

“I’ve been able to shift my perspective and find a new passion for a subject because ANU inspires and guides students in unexpected ways,” Sanuga says.

HIs journey at ANU has been transformative in many ways. From the moment he arrived on campus, he’s embraced every opportunity. His academic pursuits in engineering are complemented by a thriving social life and a passion for outdoor activities, creating a well-rounded university experience. Reflecting on his time at ANU, Sanuga says he is grateful for the scholarships.

“They have made my education possible and given me a vibrant community that has made Canberra feel like home,” he says.

As he continues his studies, Sanuga is looking forward to the future with optimism and confidence, knowing that his time at ANU has laid a strong foundation for his personal and professional growth.
