Like everyone else ANU embraces as part of its diverse and talented community, you can feel welcome here if you’re queer-identifying – and two groups are always working hard to make this possible. Meet the ANU Queer Department and Ally Network.

Overview

  • ANU is committed to being a diverse, welcoming university.
  • Getting involved in the student association's Queer Department is a great way to meet people and participate in activism.
  • The ANU Ally Network is open for students and staff interested in queer advocacy at ANU.

Read on to learn more about these queer communities at ANU and how they'll support you – and start picturing yourself as a member of our talented and inclusive community.

Welcome to the Queer Department

When you arrive, your first port of call should be the ANU Students Association's (ANUSA) Queer Department that's open to all queer-identifying students.

You’ll find a wealth of resources and support here, including exclusive access to Queer House on campus, which has its own library. Anything you need that you can't find? Just ask.

Perhaps most importantly, the department will give you a huge network of peers by taking some of the legwork and guesswork out of finding new friends and a community at the start of your ANU journey.

If you feel comfortable in the department, consider running for Queer Officer – or another of the department's deputy positions. The Queer Officer participates in ANUSA meetings and advocates for queer students to the University as part of the student association.

They’re also available for a chat and can help you and other queer students figure out where to find support and resources.

Join the Ally Network

Unlike the Queer Department, the ANU Ally Network is open to everyone – University staff and students. Membership requires you to complete the ANU Ally Training module that runs throughout the year.

The Ally Network is a bit different to the Queer Department in that it’s about activism across the Uni. So while you could join the Queer Department just to be part of the community, the Ally Network expects proactive activism.

Ally Network members provide a safe space for students and staff who might have questions about LGBTIQA+ matters. That’s not to say that the network is all business, of course. There are regular events throughout the year, giving members an opportunity to come together and meet each other.

Over the years, the Ally Network has become a vitally important part of the ANU community. its activism helps make the University a safe, welcoming place for all queer students and staff.

A place for all

No matter who you are or where you come from, there’s a place for you in the talented community at ANU. Here we work hard to ensure everyone in the University knows about the importance of queer issues and causes – and that you feel welcomed and supported throughout your studies.
